                                                           Terrat Village - Simanjiro

UCRT began working in Terrat village in Simanjiro District in 2004. The first project we undertook was the establishment of a formal 'Easement' reserve area for wildlife and cattle grazing, which was completed during the same year. Following establishment of the Easement, UCRT has been working with the Terrat leadership and community on Land Use Planning for better resource management and income generation, as well as improving community capacity through women's empowerment and improved social services.

The Terrat community comprises approximately 4200 people, of whom 80% are pastoralists and 20% are farmers and local business owners. Historically Terrat has been severely impacted by drought. Without proper management the land had reached a point where it can sustain goats but not cattle.

Terato
Game Scout in Terrat Easement Area

For Terato, his role as a game scout for the Terrat Easement area has many benefits. Not only does this job help provide for his family and enable him to work close to home, but as a pastoralist with his own livestock he personally experiences the positive outcomes of his work.
